So did you watch the episode of Koffee with Karan where Katrina Kaif admitted to shopping off of people? Sounds weird, right? Well that is what I thought, But then I realized we all do it to a certain extent. With rise of Influencer culture, fashion has gone from something we admired on ramps and television to a natural part of our everyday lives. Looking good is no longer optional, It’s Imperative.
Most of us though are novices in the universe ruled by the dolled up divas of Instagram. The plethora of options available makes it even more tough to decide who to follow. But that is not all bad because fashion is personal. Everyone has their own way of expressing themselves through it and the only right way to wear something is to wear it with CONFIDENCE.
I have never been to Fashion school but I have always loved Fashion. I learnt more about it from watching my mom or by following some amazing women on social media (Instagram) who make it look so easy. It helped me find my style and taught me how to look more put together. It also taught me about how fashion is influenced by culture, art, heritage and is not just a creative concoctions in someone’s head. I now see fashion as something more than the clothes one wears. It has become a way of self expression, telling stories, learning history and art.
Indian fashion bloggers are making a name for themselves across the globe. From bloggers based out of India like Kritika Khurana of @thatbohogirl , Shereen Sikka Bharwani of @loveandotherbugs to desi Influencers making a mark for themselves in the International arena like Masoom Minawala Mehta of @masoomminawala and Diipa Büller Khosla of @diipakhosla. These boss babes are doing their bit in making the world stand up and take notice of the Desi aesthetic. They move from ethereal gowns to royal lehngas with equal ease and sometimes blending the best of both worlds in a well structured Saree Gown.
Coming back to the shopping off of people, These Influencers are also the guides to the best fashion brands and bargains. So I decided to curate a list of Fashion forward Desi women who are acing the style game in Australia. So keep reading..
Pleatsnpallu : There is no other person I would rather start this list with. I started following Tanaya even before I moved to Australia, mainly because there is no way one is not mesmerized by her feed. It has everything from beautiful views, splashes of color to knowledge bombs about the nine yards of handloom that will always be the sexiest piece of clothing the world has ever seen. Tanaya has done more for a saree than Sri Devi or Raveena could ever do. She is redefining it’s versatility and putting her own eclectic, unabashed spin on it.
A handcrafted textile enthusiast by her own admission and an avid hater of petticoats. She has no academic background in fashion but has created a knowledge repository of textile and fabrics through extensive research. She maintains her blog as a visual diary and not as a platform to promote products. This is the very reason why I love her page. If you are a saree lover or not, Tanaya’s page is definitely worth a visit to learn more about Indian handicrafts and handlooms.
Ashworethat: I would write a wall of information for Ash, if only I can bring myself to peer my eye away from her feed. Every single picture looks like an editorial shoot straight out of a fashion magazine, carefully curated so all the elements come together in perfect unison. Luxury fashion at it’s absolute best, Ash’s wardrobe is everything I would want if I could ever afford it. Her urban chic aesthetic on display so effortlessly makes you dream of a different reality.
A marketing and finance professional who has been working in the creative Industry in UK & Australia for more than a decade. She defines her style vision as minimal, polished, elegant and classic. Her venture Creative Essence is a deep dive into the Australian fashion scene, with a namesake podcast indulging in conversations with the who’s who of the creative industry.
The_curvy_princess: Ishleen or the curvy princess is a plus size blogger based out of Melbourne. She doesn’t just proclaim self love but owns it one stunning outfit at a time. From bright colors to big prints, Ishleen’s feed is everything that conventional ideas of beauty dictate a plus size girl should never do, Yet she pulls it off with nonchalant grace. As her name claims she definitely looks like a princess in a Lehnga and oozes unflinching confidence in a sexy maxi.
She started her Insta page just to document her fashion adventures in 2014 and soon realized the lack of representation for curvy women. Armed with a cause, Ishleen started documenting fashion for curvy women in 2016. She has been featured in various publications like Vogue, Buzzfeed, TOI and HT for her work in India. After her move to Melbourne last year, She also discovered the need for south asian representation in the blogging Industry and now curates content to support both her causes.
This woman warrior is stamping her own brand on the three Bs of fashion BIG, BOLD & BEAUTIFUL. So check her page out to share some love.
Mystyleperspective: Meet Neha Walia, your friendly neighbourhood street style fashionista. Neha has the innate ability to make comfortable look classy, meticulously curating looks for the fashion hall of fame. The pop of color and sparkle in her outfits speaks and tells me stories of a happy chirpy soul that adorns her heart on her sleeve.
Her feed is her everyday mood board, As you scroll through; you wonder if there is anything this girl can’t pull off. Her style flows from androgynous to feminine, prints to sequins, bold to subtle so seamlessly.
She owns a quirky café in Hawthorn that speaks of her love of all things bright and colourful. Whether it’s the gorgeous interiors or luscious food, FI:KA is straight out of an Instagramer’s dream. So the next time you plan a brunch out with the girls do drop by for some rainbow pancakes (yes, you read that right) or Sundae in the clouds (I eat dessert for lunch :-p )
Whatsforstyle: Purva is a new mum and also new to blogging, So has relatively less following compared to the bloggers I mentioned above. But make no mistake, as she brings her styling A-game despite being a full time Management Consultant and a mother. She started her blog a year ago, logging style for her little munchkin which slowly evolved to a fashion feed that featured both mum and bub.
There are two things that I absolutely love about Purva. First being, She doesn’t shy away from styling flats and sneakers with most looks and still manages to look voguish. Since I am a sneaker head myself, I use her feed as a personal style guide on occasions.
The second is her ability to make affordable fashion look like a million bucks. Her style is a mix of functional and preppy. Her feed has everyday looks that all of us can adopt. So definitely visit her Insta page for some relatable fashion tips.
